Giving back through life-changing experiences.
Shine: Play It Forward, is a 501 (c) 3 and was developed to recognize the life’s work of, Tom Shine. In 2021, Tom lost his courageous seven-year battle with cancer. Through his life and ultimate journey, fighting cancer, Tom demonstrated strength and an unrelenting positive attitude. This strength has become the backbone for us to follow. Our mission is: A commitment to service excellence, through supporting academic, athletic, and leadership development in youth.
Tom was a student, athlete, coach and impactful contributor in life. Through his journey, Tom witnessed values and lessons of hard work, honesty, ruthless integrity and the ability to face adversity and challenges with calm, stoic bravery. Tom took those lessons to heart, striving for achievement in both his personal and professional life. Tom believed in academics, the sport, the coaches, the school's and each other, while creating legendary moments. Service gave Tom purpose, drive, success and defeat . . . all with character. Tom transformed players into coaches and changed their lives into who they are today. Many have gone on to live, teach, coach, and perform based on Tom’s teachings, leadership, and guidance . . . that is a gift no- one can buy! Not only was teaching and coaching a job, it became a life style that developed Tom into a man of integrity, commitment, and character. As an El Modena Hall of Fame inductee, Tom left his indelible mark at El Modena High School.
The Shine: Play It Forward Scholarship program recognizes high school seniors for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact within their school, sport, and most importantly, within their communities. The scholarship recognizes athletes of character who are community- minded and driven to use their exceptional talents for the benefit of all... those who dare to be great.

Throughout Tom's life, he impacted 1,000's of lives through teaching, coaching, mentoring, leadership, and friendship. In honor of his life, we carry forth the same spirit of giving. Even though Tom's impact was felt far and wide, our focus begins with the foundation of where he came from and is dedicated to giving back in his honor. His roots as a student, athlete, and coach extend to:
We hosted four men's high school teams: Citrus Hill, El Dorado, Riverside Poly, and Martin Luther King to attend the CBU vs GCU basketball game. It was an honor to share the value of how friendship plays a part in one's life. Each of these teams had a direct impact on our life as a family either through their coaches or directly with individual players.
Throughout Tom's journey, Brenda developed menus to support his changing appetite. This developed into Bebe's Cafe. Brenda has taken this approach to pay tribute for friends to gather, share in conversation and enjoy the cuisine. Brenda has turned this initiative into "Dining for a Cause," where all proceeds support the foundation.

Throughout Tom's life, he was a fierce competitor. Sports were pivotal. He was an ardent storyteller. He remembered games, dates, scores, plays, and players. The time he spent with his kids, grandkids, friends, coaches, and players drove the essence of his being. When asked what his favorite course to play was, Tom would respond, "it is not about the course, as much as it is about the people you are with." Tom left a profound resonating impact on many people's lives. We hope you will join us in celebrating Tom and a game he loved to play.

Tom was never, just, a spectator. Everyone looked to him for advice, comradery, and support. Rick, our son-in-law, and head men's basketball coach at Cal Baptist University, honored Tom as an honorary coach in 2021.
Tom was an amazing guy, always positive and upbeat, while facing adversity. I so enjoyed the days we spent playing golf in Duarte with his high school buddies and then adjourning to Santa Anita race track for a day at the races. He introduced me to some great guys from the San Gabriel valley, with whom I could relate since I grew up in

Tom was loved by many and I look forward to the event and seeing many friends.

Tom was my favorite coach to play for and helped me become the coach and man that I'm today.

Uncle Tom made our visits growing up so happy and fun. Every memory I have with him is positive, from telling stories on the deck to playing "tough guy" with us. He holds a special place in my heart.

My name is Bernie Fratto, and I knew Tom Shine very well. He was our baseball coach and offensive coordinator for Varsity Football at El Modena High School. In 2002, I reached out to him to let him know I would be in town. I wanted to have dinner with him as well as your mom Brenda. It was awesome. We hadn't spoken in over 20 years, but

In 2002, I reached out to him to let him know I would be in town. I wanted to have dinner with him as well as your mom Brenda. It was awesome. We hadn't spoken in over 20 years, but it was like we never missed a beat. Coach always set a standard for us to live up to. He had a terrific way of knowing our ceiling and how to get you there. He knew Xs and Os, but moreover, he knew people and what made us tick. In 1978, While I was red-shirting in College, he called me up and hired me to coach the Frosh-Soph baseball team. I said yes, and we went 15-4. I could never figure out why. So I asked Coach at that dinner, "Why me?" I did not deserve it. He said he thought I was an extreme competitor and a thinker, even in High School. I was shocked at how he saw that in me at age 16. But that was Coach Shine. In 1979 when I signed with the Cincinnati Reds, I visited Coach Shine to tell him. He smiled. He seemed very proud.

Coach Shine was one of the main reasons I decided to become a coach. An incredibly positive force in guiding players and young coaches. The best guy, fun, funny, loyal, innovative, and competitive. Best guy I knew. So many of us have thought that over the years that became coaches. Sunday morning game planning sessions with him

All of us hope to carry on the lessons and values he taught us to our players and our own kids.
